Replacement of Various Escalators and Elevators at Newport Station and Harrison Car Maintenance Facility

CLIENT

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey / PATH

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As sub-consultant to Gannett Fleming, Inc., AEA provided Electrical and Electronic Engineering Design Services for the replacement of three (3) elevators and four (4) escalators at Newport Station located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Replacement of these installations was required due to damages occurred during Hurricane Sandy. Work also included electrical design for replacement of three (3) HVAC units and installation of CCTV cameras above the escalators. Project scope includes Stage I Report, Stage III Design, and Stage IV Post-Design Services. The project seeks to improve platform clearance time and passenger circulation within the station, and improve safety and security. Multiple options were evaluated to determine final recommendations. Under final conditions, elevators will satisfy partial ADA compliance and Escalators will satisfy full ADA compliance. AEA performed field investigations to document existing conditions, evaluating multiple options for replacement of escalators and elevator installations, and provided recommendations. Evaluated existing power distribution equipment to determine potential reuse. Determined required modifications to existing panelboards, disconnect switches, circuit breakers, wiring, and conduit routing to feed proposed installations. Performed electrical load and voltage drop calculations, conduit fill, wire sizing, and transformer calculations. Electronic design includes communications network block diagrams, CCTV block diagrams, telephone block diagrams, elevator controllers, escalator and sump pump monitoring block diagrams, fiber optic and Ethernet cable distribution. Design included remote monitoring system for all elevators and escalators within Newport Station to be monitored within Journal Square Transportation Center.

Also, as a sub-consultant to Gannett Fleming Inc., AEA provided Electrical and Electronic Engineering Design Services for the replacement of three (3) elevators at Harrison Car Maintenance Facility located in Harrison, New Jersey. Evaluation for replacement of these elevators was required due to damages occurred during Hurricane Sandy. Project scope includes Stage I Report, Stage III Design. The project is currently under Stage III Design and Stave IV Post Design Services is anticipated to be approved at a later date. Multiple options were evaluated to determine final recommendations. Recommendations with the Stage I Report concluded that Maintenance repairs after Hurricane Sandy were sufficient to limit scope to replacement of elevator cabins only. AEA performed field investigations to document existing conditions, evaluating multiple options for replacement of elevator installations, and provided recommendations. Evaluated existing power distribution equipment to determine reuse. Determined required power distribution modifications. Performed electrical load and voltage drop calculations, conduit fill, wire sizing, and transformer calculations. Electronic design includes communications network block diagrams, CCTV block diagrams, telephone block diagrams, elevator controllers, fiber optic and Ethernet cable distribution. Design included remote monitoring system for all elevators and escalators within Harrison Car Maintenance Facility to be monitored within Journal Square Transportation Center.
