Route I-80 ITS Communication System – Ethernet Network Design

CLIENT

New Jersey Department of Transportation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

AEA developed a new gigabit fiber-optic Ethernet network for communications of all ITS devices located on the busy corridor of I-80, I-287, and I-95 in northern New Jersey. All plans, specifications, engineers estimate and special requirements were developed and provided to NJDOT. This submittal included construction, staging and traffic control plans, special inserts, and Primavera construction schedule. Network staging was developed to avoid any down time to the ITS network. As part of the project, NJDOT is phasing out an antiquated SONET communications system, and are upgrading all communication to TCP/IP in anticipation of future device upgrades and ITS system expansion. A critical portion of this project is developing comprehensive staging details that will allow the existing systems to continue operational while the new network and equipment is installed and tested, ensuring that the benefits of the existing ITS devices are not lost during construction. NJDOT is currently implementing the modifications to phase out the outdated SONET network and replace with IP based Cisco network.
